The churches of Trabia: between art and history
For history, art and culture lovers, in Trabia it is possible to admire numerous historic churches of different artistic styles.
CHURCH OF SANTA PETRONILLA
Proceeding along Corso La Masa, there is Trabia’s Mother Church, dedicated to Santa Petronilla and commissioned by Giuseppe Lanza.
Inside the church is treasured the bronze Cross, found in 1830 during the collection of sea pebbles intended for the ornamentation of the Calvary Chapel. According to the legend, after the discovery, the plague was vanquished and so the inhabitants led a solemn procession. There is also a painting representing the saint after whom the church is named and one portraying the Virgin of the Rosary. Since 1973, the spoils of Brother Andrew Tonda, who died in concept of sanctity, are also kept in the church.
CHURCH OF SANT’OLIVA
Just before entering Trabia is the village’s oldest church, that of Sant’Oliva.
It was used until the 1800s as a local cemetery, and has a precious altar from the Lanza Castle church. It houses two works: the martyrdom of St. Stephen and a Madonna and Child made in the Flemish style.
CALVARY CHAPEL
The Calvary Chapel is located in front of the church of Santa Petronilla.
Every year, during the Venerdì Santo (Holy Friday) celebrations, the simulacra of Christ and the Vergine Addolorata are placed in front of each other and the devotees in procession, sing songs related to the Passion of Christ, creating an evocative atmosphere.
CHURCH OF MADONNA DELLE GRAZIE
Just before entering Trabia from Termini Imerese you will find the church of Madonna delle Grazie. Inside there is an artwork depicting the patron saints of the towns of Termini Imerese: St. Calogero and Blessed Augustine on the sides of the Madonna delle Grazie, and a crucifix that, according to legend, was found with muddy feet inside the church after being moved to Termini, as if it had wanted to return to Trabia.
CHAPEL OF SANTA ROSALIA
Another interesting attraction to visit in Trabia is, certainly, the Chapel of Santa Rosalia. It is located on the seashore, just below the town, and is almost always a destination for newlyweds who intend to pay homage to the Santuzza and take advantage of the splendid view to make unique photos of the most romantic day.
The Chapel is made of sea pebbles and stalactites and is embellished with paintings and mosaics.
Another special attraction is the statue of the Piscaturi. The fisherman, representing one of Trabia’s oldest professions, is placed on the cliff, gazing out to sea.
